1 Bedroom Cabin in Nevis

The State of Minnesota has decided to categorize any property rented for more than 14 days through sites such as VRBO as commercial property. The sales tax we collected plus our regular property tax was not enough to satisfy the greed of the State Legislators. Our property tax changed from approximately $4,000 to over $9,000 per year. Unfortunately, while the individual single property owner is impacted the real loser is the tourist with reduced inventory and increased rental rates. With the new tax rules in mind, for 2022 and beyond we are only opening the cabin for two weeks of rental.
Come enjoy a quiet relaxing vacation in our REMOTE wooded cabin located roughly 30 minutes from Itasca State Park (headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River). Nearby are the restaurants of Dorset (15 miles) and the bigger towns of Park Rapids (25 miles) and Bemidji (40 miles). If you are here during "Taste of Dorset" I highly recommend attending!
We open the cabin in May and close in October, the water pipes are not insulated and the dock has to come out before ice forms. We try to update the cabin a little every year: 2013, we updated the kitchen, fireplace and TV. In 2015 new carpet went in along with a new couch after the previous one fell apart as I was moving it for the carpet. Opps, sorry Mom. 2016, new roof on the cabin, new grill and a high speed internet connection. 2018, new roof on the garage. 2021, new outside furniture and started thinning the dead trees from the surrounding area. And for 2022, a new Shoremaster dock.
Bring your boat; the fishing on Big Mantrap Lake is typically phenomenal! And, lots of fishermen come to our bay as their favorite spot. Big Mantrap is a deep water lake known for its Muskie fishing but you can also enjoy catching largemouth bass, walleye, crappies, sunfish and northern pike. You can catch everything off the dock (I've seen it done!) but heading out on the water is sooo fun. We have kid skis and plenty of life jackets and other toys in the garage. There are companies nearby that rent boats and deliver them to the public landing if you don't want to haul yours from home.
Sleeping arrangements are as follows: Master bedroom with a queen bed, a loft with a queen bed, two day beds (one on the enclosed porch the other in the den) and one sleeper sofa in the den. So, technically, the cabin sleeps 8 but I will say the place is not real big and you will have to be family or real close friends that don’t mind sleeping near each other. I just slept in the queen bed in the master bedroom for the first time. My Grandparents and then Mother always slept in the bedroom previously but on our last visit nobody wanted to listen to my snoring! It wasn't bad, the new mattress is comfortable but my favorite bed is still the loft. Even after knee surgery and temporarily walking with a cane I managed to get up the vertical ladder to the loft. My kids and wife thought I was nuts. But, I have to sleep in my bed at least once per trip!
More important than sleeping arrangements, there are TWO restrooms inside the cabin and one outhouse. The main bathroom has a tub/shower and the other is a half bath with a clothes washer and dryer.
SMOKING POLICY: Please no smoking inside the cabin. While I support your right to smoke I cannot condone smoking inside the cabin because the smell is bothersome to non-smokers. Please go outside to enjoy your tobacco products. If our caretaker reports the smell inside the cabin we may be forced to impose an additional cleaning fee.
NOTE: I added directions to the public landing near the Boy Scout campgrounds in the map view and I added two links to maps on the Minnesota DNR website. Read them carefully it is easy to get confused. Also, we continue to have email issues where messages are going directly to 'junk'. If you don't get a return email within a week, please text or call the contact number.
Sincerely, Steve

Summary: This sweet little cabin was nothing short of wonderful. It is on a beautiful private bay with loons, deer and otters for neighbors. Quiet, peaceful and almost magical. The cabin was stocked with everything we needed and amazingly clean. We felt very honored to be able to stay in this lovely family cabin. Thank you Steve and Ann, we hope to return again next year.
