Tavira is one of the most elegant and beautiful towns on the Algarve abounding in Roman and Moorish history and retaining a rare unspoiled charm. Its narrow cobbled streets, ancient castle, old churches, traditional tiled houses and Roman bridge spanning the broad River Gilao running through the town make Tavira to be unique. There´s a huge indoor market with fresh fruits, vegetables, fish and meat.
There are many riverside restaurants on both sides of the Gilao River, connected by the Roman bridge. There are cafes and restaurants and shops. For those who enjoy a night on the town, Monte Gordo and Aymonte (Spain - 20 mins away) offer lots of bars, restaurants as well as a casino complete with nightly shows.
The beach can be reached from the town by regular ferry crossings to the Ilha de Tavira opposite the town. This glorious long sandy beach (life guarded) has great cafes and restaurants. There are a number of other sandy beaches close, all huge and clean (Praia Verde; Manta Rota, Altura and Cabanas 20 km radius). This stretch of coast has the warmest sea in Portugal.
The unspoiled coast is within the Ria Formosa National Park, a World Heritage site. Tavira's massive clean sandy beach is one of the best in Europe, with EC Blue Flag status, uncrowded even in summer.
For the nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the Ria Formosa reserve where bird watching is in abundance.
There are 6 prestigious golf courses, east of Tavira. All within 20 minutes drive. The 2 latest are the Jack Nicklaus Signature course - Monte Rei, with it's luxurious Clubhouse and magnificent views over the course and surrounding countryside. The first Severiano Ballesteros Championship design lies at the edge of the River Guadiana. Castro Marim is a par 71 (73 ladies) on the Portuguese/Spanish border.
Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima where several PGA European Tour events have been hosted. Benamor which was the first course east of Faro, designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton. There are Summer discounts at most courses.
Excelent shopping centers in Tavira, Faro, Guia as well as the famous water parks and Zoo Marine reached by car 45 minutes. The airport is 30 minutes drive. Seville is less than 2 hours by car. Lisbon 3 hours drive, on the motorway. Car is recommended but not essential.
