The space
The house is furnished and decorated with the aim of providing guests with a cozy spot that feels like a home.
The top floor includes the master bedroom with a queen-size bed, a smaller bedroom with a twin bed, and the main bath/shower. The master bedroom has a 32 -inch TV with a Roku device.
The main floor has the kitchen, dining room, and living room, as well as the entrance to the sun room, which is best enjoyed in the non-winter months. The living room and the sun room have a Japanese theme based on items collected over the years, including our years living in Japan. The living room has a 50-inch Roku TV sitting on top of the electric fireplace and a 7-in-1 Victrola record player.
The walkout basement has a small bedroom with a full bed, a family/games room, a kitchenette, and a toilet and sink, plus a partially-finished laundry/furnace room with a shower, washing machine, and a dryer. The family games room has a wall-mounted 32-inch Roku TV, a collection of new board and card games, a record player, and artwork created by Bruno Cavallo, the local designer of the famous Big Nickel. The basement bedroom has a 32-inch TV (with a Roku device) sitting on the small electric fireplace.
From the lower back porch, you can walk directly to the 8-foot cedar sauna without using any stairs. The sauna has a powerful electric heater.
Despite many upgrades over the decades, this house retains its finest original features including original hardwood floors, hot water radiator heating, historic window casings, and a plaster living room ceiling. In keeping with the style of the house, we have largely furnished it in a retro style.
As the house is located halfway down the slope to the lake, and the property borders feature many tall pine and cedar trees, and three giant birches, both the front and backyards feel somewhat private and secluded despite the urban setting. In season, the property has numerous flower beds populated mainly with perennials. There are also a few vegetable/herb beds and a pergola for grapes.
For lake activity in the late spring, summer and early fall, we have a floating dock, and we offer two kayaks, a paddle board, a canoe, and fishing rods for your enjoyment. In these seasons, we also provide a fire pit.
For the winter, in our lower back porch, we provide one pair each of men's and women's snowshoes, two Ugly Stick ice fishing rods and an ice auger. We may be able to maintain a small ice rink on the lake for part of the winter, but it depends on the weather.
Guest access
Guests will have access to all three floors of the house, including the walkout basement. The small building (studio) close to the street houses an office and tools and supplies for the host.
Other things to note
-- **Guests with mobility issues should consider that, as shown in the photos, there are stairs to get to the house and more stairs down to the lake.**
-- The second bathroom is in the walkout basement, with the shower being in the laundry/furnace room.
-- The air conditioning is provided from late spring to early fall from window units installed in the top floor bedrooms and another window unit in the main floor dining room. Multiple tower and box fans are also provided for the comfort of guests.
-- The ceiling to the laundry/furnace room is low (about 6 feet 5 inches) and the ceiling is low over the landing for the stairs leading up from the basement to the main floor.
-- The dishwashing machine is small (in order to fit into the available under-counter space).
