If you are after a quiet, secure and cheap place to stay in Tarawa then you should try my place.
Neighbours are are also visitors, expatriates working in Kiribati who rent 3 other next door houses.
My house also used to be rented long term by expatriates who come to work in Kiribati, but since 2017 we have opened it up to shorter-term visitors via Homeaway and other websites. Since then we have had guests from the UK, NZ and Australia staying at the house. The latest guest was a researcher from Australia who stayed at the house in the first two weeks of July, 2017. Most of our guests are business travellers coming for work-related activities many of whom have actually been staying at hotels/motels before opting to move into my place for a quieter, cheaper and more home-like stay in Tarawa.
The owner currently lives abroad and therefore guests will have good privacy and access to the whole house and the surrounding compound. However, there is a caretaker who will meet you on arrival to help you settle in and respond to any needs during your stay.
The house has screened windows and doors to keep mosquitoes and flies out and it also has air conditioning. With the house fully fenced, and windows having security wire, the house is well secured.
You won't miss your favourite news, entertainment and sports programmes with a 25-channel Sky Pacific TV available at the house.
For those who wish to have breaks from restaurant food and cook for themselves, the house has a small kitchen with a new stove and cooking/eating utensils. A new fridge is also available for storing your food and drink supplies.
For those who wish to do their own laundry, the house has an outdoor laundry with a new washing machine. We can also organise someone to provide onsite laundry services for you but at a small additional cost.
During your stay, you will be provided fresh towels and linen. Coffee, tea, milk, sugar and wheetbix are provided on arrival. An iron and ironing board are also available at the house.
Internet can be accessed from the house. A local SIM is cheap and is easy to get from ATHKL, the main Internet Service Provider on the island. Once your phone is configured for mobile Internet, you can access internet from the house. The main ATHKL outlet is in Bairiki next to the ANZ bank, less than 10 minutes drive (5.3 km) from the property.
My property is a self-contained house on its own, situated at a good location (Antenon) at the ocean side, close to FEMA lodge, not far from the University of the South Pacific Centre and parliament, and not that far from the town, Bairiki.
There are many small shops alongside the main road that sell internet recharge cards, but the nearby bigger ones are Fair Price shop and Taotin Trading Store, about 3-5 minutes drive (1.8 km) from the property. The closest ANZ bank ATMs are at Taotin Trading Store (1.8 km away) and in front of the parliament complex (2.1 km away).
